Mario Theissen Speaks on FOTA Breakaway From F1
Posted by: | Comments“The FOTA teams endeavoured to the very end to reach an agreement, but regrettably the FIA refused to back down from its rigid position, insisting that the teams must first sign up before there could be any negotiations on the rules. This was unacceptable to us.
“FOTA therefore has no choice but to press ahead with preparations for an alternative championship. In the series organised by FOTA, the best drivers and the best teams will compete against each other. This will take place within a stable set of regulations and a transparent management structure. We will also take into account the wishes of the fans, who have lent us a great deal of support particularly in recent weeks.
“Since its founding in September of last year, FOTA has been committed to cutting costs in Formula One, enhancing its appeal and supporting independent teams. During this short period of time, more has been achieved than ever before in the history of Formula One.
“We will not be making any further statements on the matter during this weekend. We want to concentrate fully on the race and provide the fans with the spectacle they deserve.”

BMW Sauber Should Scrap KERS all Together
Posted by: | Comments
The off season when following the development of the KERS KERS system was an exciting, but up and down time for BMW Sauber and now early in June KERS hasn’t featured on the F1.09 since before the Spanish Grand Prix and even then it was Robert Kubica’s only race with the system on board. Kubica’s weight issue prevented his usage of the system and during the process of introducing 2 major revisions to the car in Spain and Turkey with Monaco in between, it’s usage has almost disappeared. Now with the British Grand Prix only a week and a half away, Theissen isn’t even sure it will re appear then either.
BMW Sauber has been a major proponent of the KERS system and it’s development from the get go and only a few days ago was the system voted down for next season by FOTA. Theissen still believes in the system, but as a member of FOTA will go along with their decision to not use it for 2010.
To Continue F1.09 Development or Focus on 2010. That is the Question
Posted by: | Comments
The question that has been posed recently by the media is this. Should BMW Sauber stop or dramatically slow down development of the F1.09 in favour of next year’s car (presumably the F1.10)? It is an interesting question and a good one at that. The championship is gone for 2009, a championship they were aiming a good run at before the season started. From talking to other BMW Sauber fans the answer to that comes pretty equally both ways. Many are just fed up and say cut your losses, finish whatever modifications are on the table and then focus on next season. Others obviously say no including Dr. Mario Theissen who is adamant on bringing the F1.09 up to a competitive level and challenge for serious points.
No KERS for BMW Sauber in Turkey
Posted by: | CommentsThis weekend in Turkey is probably the most important weekend for all season for the team. It’s sort of a do or die weekend where they could really move up the grid or wallow in the back without much hope of recovery. I’m hoping for the first scenario as I hope you are.
As I mentioned earlier in a post, BMW Sauber is bringing another aero package in conjunction with the first major upgrade introduced in Barcelona. This one includes the new multi level diffuser that with any luck will improve their pace quite a bit. For the last few races the team has elected not to use their KERS system and it was thought they would re introduce it this weekend in Turkey, but that is not the case. One step at a time they say and just as in Barcelona they want to evaluate the aero package before they complicate it with KERS.
Double Decker Confirmed in Turkey for BMW Sauber

Dear motorsport enthusiasts,
It goes without saying that everyone at the BMW Sauber F1 Team had envisaged the Monaco Grand Prix turning out very differently to what it did. However, what hinted at being a problem in Thursday’s first free practice session set the tone for the entire race weekend, from qualifying to the end of the race. We could not keep the tyres at the optimal operating temperature in Monaco, which resulted in us clearly being to slow.
Letter From Theissen – We’re Moving Forward

Dear motorsport enthusiasts,
Before the start of European Formula One season in Spain, we were all very curious to see what effect our extensive new aerodynamic package would have in Barcelona. We now know one thing for definite: the modifications have improved the BMW Sauber F1.09. We have taken a big step forwards, and are back in business.
In the second round of qualifying, Robert managed to progress to the top ten with just one set of soft tyres. The fact that we then made a mistake when fitting the tyres is, of course, frustrating. Robert certainly had what it takes to start from a few rows further forward – particularly as the times of all the cars were so close. The field is still extremely close together. The top eleven places in Q2 were separated by just 6 tenths of a second – one small mistake and Q3 is a thing of the past. In the race, the pit team more than made up for their mistake. They worked brilliantly to manoeuvre Nick past his rivals during the pit stops.
This week at the BMW Sauber Camp
Posted by: | CommentsTo catch up and update the latest with the team after me being absent for a couple of days here goes.
Originally we had some thoughts that the new development package BMW Sauber were planning for Barcelona would include a double decker diffuser. That turned out not to be true and it won’t be until Turkey that the car will have the newly designed diffuser.
KERS, one of the strong points for Mario Theissen is to be removed from the cars for the Spanish Grand Prix and for the following race in Monaco. This isn’t because Theissen has fallen out of love with it, but instead would rather concentrate on the new aero package without the device and work from there. Monaco was never on the KERS calendar for the team either, but only because the track is so darn full of slow speed turns and so short that it would be a complete waste of space and weight.
More Specifics on F1.09 Update for Spain

The team is set to introduce a very extensive development package for the F1.09 next weekend in Spain. There has been no question that the F1.09 is lacking pace and overall grip, something that caught the team off guard with Theissen almost seeming embarrassed by what he’s put out on the track.
