After 2 major upgrades to the F1.09 which included a new aero package for Spain, and now more updates to the aero with the addition of a ‘first situation’ double diffuser in Turkey, the results are beginning to show. All you need to do is look at sector times as compared to any of the previous 3 or 4 grand prix to see the difference. The season is not lost, not yet. The championship may be, but respect as a contender once again is not.

The Turkish Grand Prix itself was an exciting race for BMW Sauber in that Kubica and Heidfeld’s starting grid positions were far better than we would have hoped for without this weekends upgrades if they hadn’t had an effect. 10th and 11th on the grid were a major lift to previous frustration and anguish and set the stage for a much better race and indeed that is what we BMW Sauber fans got.

One race to forget! Where do I go from here? BMW Sauber has sunk to an all time low with the Chinese Grand Prix and something needs to be done asap. Less talk from Mario Theissen about diffusers and more work to be competitive.

Nick Heidfeld lined up on the grid in 11th place after getting everything out of the car with the best lap he could. KERS probably was the only reason he made it through to session 2 as the car lacked overall grip and neither the choice of super soft or soft tire choice mattered.

As far as Robert Kubica was concerned, he was not happy with the car from the time it landed in China and he was pinning his hopes that fitting his car with the KERS device for the first time this season would help. He hadn’t used the device because of it’s added weight which combined with his extra weight being a heavier driver left little room for ballast to balance out the car. Adding KERS for China almost seemed like a desperation move and after testing it out in Friday practice it was quickly removed proving it was a waste of time.

Before I continue, is there anyone out there who thinks a 5pm start in Malaysia is a good thing? I thought so.
Once again Jenson Button in his Brawn GP was unstoppable leaving all the 1 step diffuser teams on their knees praying for April 14 to come. Not to take everything away from Button, he drove a top notch race both on land and in the river.

The race for BMW was for me bitter sweet. I am super happy the team raced to it’s second podium by way of Nick Heidfeld, but still hurting from the parade lap engine failure that took Robert Kubica out of the race on lap 1 with the engine cowling on fire.

It was a terrific grand prix don’t you think? Brawn GP 1-2 in their first race was worth the late night TV. Toyota clawing their way back to the front with Jarno Trulli after a pit lane start only to be demoted once again. Sebastien Vettel is a good fit in the Red Bull isn’t he? There were a lot of great and not so great stories that came from that race including BMW Sauber. Nick Heidfeld punted off the track in the first lap and then driving a damaged car for the entire race knowing he would be bringing up the rear isn’t so good. Robert Kubica challenging for the lead only to crash out after controversial contact with Vettel very near the end of the race certainly isn’t the greatest event either.
