This week at the BMW Sauber Camp
ByOriginally we had some thoughts that the new development package BMW Sauber were planning for Barcelona would include a double decker diffuser. That turned out not to be true and it won’t be until Turkey that the car will have the newly designed diffuser.
KERS, one of the strong points for Mario Theissen is to be removed from the cars for the Spanish Grand Prix and for the following race in Monaco. This isn’t because Theissen has fallen out of love with it, but instead would rather concentrate on the new aero package without the device and work from there. Monaco was never on the KERS calendar for the team either, but only because the track is so darn full of slow speed turns and so short that it would be a complete waste of space and weight.
The ever negative Robert Kubica isn’t impressed with the aero package being sent to Spain and he hasn’t even driven the car yet. His issue is one of almost resentment that the team was left behind in the development race and that bringing the major upgrade now wasn’t early enough. The upgrade will be a significant one, but most other teams will also be bringing major upgrades as well diluting it’s punch power.
Nick Heidfeld is also starting to show a little frustration at the situation and that must mean something. Heidfeld has always been the positive one and the quiet believer of the two drivers, but some of his ’suggestive’ comments of late tell a different story.
BMW Sauber have joined with Ferrari in denouncing the new two tiered budget structure as not being attractive. Many reports have suggested that BMW would be willing to pull the plug on the team if the two tiered system were to go ahead. I’m not any more of a believer in that as I am that Ferrari would walk away, but there is a concern.
It all starts tomorrow with Friday practice or should I say testing and we should get an idea of where they stand by the end of the second session.

The modifications are so big i have to go with a bigger gain than Kubica thinks. Q will tell don’t you say.

It is good no KERS for next races. I have not see too many good overal gains with KERS. Red Bull is quick and haven’t got it. Much too weight and much too money and not worth it.

THe modifications looks good. In polish newspapers there is quoted Kubica, and he is speaking: “It give us 0.5 seconds for a lap.”

Very comprehensive upgrades, it really is like a “B” car. Even the nose is significantly different! (I expected that with diffuser implimentation, but that’s not till Turkey!) The rear wing is very radical in it’s design, and my are those sidepods getting small!
Solid first practice times speak well of the package – this is their first test on Asphalt! With further development, it seems they can be very quick. I’m not sure if this chassis has been lightened as planned for KERS use down the road, but if all factors including KERS can come together in a few races, they may still have a slim shot at the title.
