Middle of the Pack for BMW Sauber in Monaco

By BMWF1guy

Monaco weekend is on so what can we expect from BMW Sauber? The circuit is so slow and twisty that huge downforce is essential to not only stay away from the walls, but place respectably. This could be a problem for the team still suffering with lower downforce than they need. Barcelona saw a huge upgrade that did make a difference, but we really didn’t get much of a look during the grand prix. Qualifying in Spain showed a stepping stone of improvement, but without a good working double diffuser the car is still lacking.

That said, Monaco and it’s thirst for high downforce will be somewhat of a difficult race for Kubica and Heidfeld and top 10 will only come with attrition and great pit strategy. The guys are fairly upbeat and Robert is especially positive for this race (something we haven’t seen in a while) and needs to go out and better all his previous results. Nick Heidfeld has been the sole provider of points for the team this year with a total of 6 largely on his ability to finish a race along with some great pit strategy.

Free practice one for the Monaco Grand Prix had Kubica in 16th and Heidfeld almost identical but in 17th over 2 seconds behind leader Rubens Barichello. The track is as green as it gets and with no rubber laid down to aid in grip, their times reflect it. Once more rubber is laid down I give them 4 or 5 more positions by the end of practice session 2 which starts in 15 minutes. See you after that with full results of both sessions.
