Double Decker Confirmed in Turkey for BMW Sauber
By
The Istanbul circuit is much better suited to the F1.09 than Monaco was simply because of the tire choices available. In Monaco it was the soft and super soft compounds that compounded the lack of grip the car had. In Turkey it will be hard and soft compounds that are very different than those used in Monaco and much more suited to the car
Is it too late in the season for any serious improvement? Serious improvement, no I don’t believe it is, but this upgrade will go a long way to giving us a good indication of where the team will sit the rest of the season.
Willy Rampf, Head of Engineering:
“We’ll be lining up in Turkey with a new development package, which also features a double diffuser. Since the F1.09 concept was not designed for this, we had to make a number of aerodynamic adjustments. There are modifications to the front wings, side bargeboards, rim shields and the rear part of the engine cover. We expect this to take us a step forward, although we know that our rivals are not standing still.”

Of interest, Dr. Mario Theissen has several times refered to the re-worked diffuser as “multi level” rather than double. Toyota still are very apprehensive to let anyone photograph the rear of their car (mind you, you could’t pay someone to copy them, they just can’t get it together after having the largest budget in F1 for many, many years).
In typcical BMW style, if they are to adjust to something new, they will not only match it but expound upon it and improve upon the concept. Is it possible that with this “Legal” arrangement there is now room to further push the envelope, perhaps with a tri-level diffuser or otherwise? Could this be BMW’s revenge?!?
Such massive and fundamental changes have been made to the F1.09 since the Diffuser debacle that new crash testing was required on certain parts of the chassis!!! Many major aero elements from the front wing back have been reworked, it’s as though this weekends car is the completed puzzle.
I sincerely hope that BMW see the performance improvment needed to win at least one race this year, and get back on several podiums. If in the next two races BMW is not up to competitive levels, than it’s time to put pen to paper on the F1.10.
Here’s to a fresh start!
