Lighter New F1.09 With Double Decker Diffuser?

By BMWF1guy

BMW Sauber will debut their first major upgrade to the car in Barcelona this year. The F1.09 is going lighter. A new updated and lighter chassis will be introduced at the Spanish Grand prix with the specific reason to allow Robert Kubica to use the KERS device. Kubica as one of the heavier drivers has been unable to use KERS this season due to his weight and the weight of the KERS equipment.

With the new lighter chasis and if the double decker diffusers are deemed legal the team will also introduce an interim version of the double decker diffuser design.

After the hearing today and the probability of the diffusers finally deemed legal I’m sure we will see other teams introducing their new diffuser designs as soon as they can get them out.

Both sound good on paper and if effective could boost BMW Sauber closer to the front of the grid. The F1.09 isn’t all that slow and has proved with Kubica especially in Melbourne that it isn’t that far off the pace. Nick Heidfeld has had success with KERS both in Melbourne in defending his position when he had to drive a damaged car for almost the entire race didstance and in Malaysia when he pulled off 2nd place on the podium.

I don’t have too much detail about the update package and Mario Theissen when asked about a weight reduction program by Autosport is keeping his mouth shut not giving anything away at this point.

“That would help exactly. We have some developments ongoing, but…wait and see. I don’t want to go into detail now.”

For now we weight :) and see.

Great news!!! I agree that the F1.09 already has great pace. Of the non diffuser 3, they are cleary the fastest along with Newey’s car, the RedBull.

With these upgades and BMW’s agressive ambition to succeed, I’m confident they’ll be scoring regular podiums by Spain onwards. Of course the Diffuser 3 will continue to develop.

I’m currious how well suited the F1.09 is to modification with the diffuser – for some teams it will not be as complicated a change based on rear suspension setup etc.

I suspect Kubica with KERS will be formidable.

I’m hoping. By then other teams will have or will be rolling out their first improvements as well. McLaren has a major upgrade set for China.

You’re right though, Kubica with KERS will be very good. Lets hope they can incorporate it with proper weight reduction so it has a really good effect.
