Steering Wheels for F1.09 of Robert and Nick Compared to F1.08
ByHere’s a look at the steering wheels of both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica for the F1.09 as well as Nick Heidfeld’s wheel as it was for the F1.08. The most notable additions to the F1.09 wheels are the dial (23) for the front wing and the KERS button (7).

How Much do these steering wheels cost ?
and is there a technician who maintains them specifically ?
also what are the intelligence systems employed;
as it obviously does link to a computer network somewhere.
how is that accomplished ?

Ok, someone wants to test me.
First, a wheel cost upward of $40000 and the team has an engineer who is in charge of wheel development.
The wheel itself is very technical looking and does a lot of things, but the expense comes from the carbon fibre parts and other design parts as well as how the quick connect is constructed and the customization. The actual controls that cover the wheel are just dials and buttons that send info to the main ECU in the car. The ECU is far too complicated to even attempt to get into. It is a highly sophisticated computer system and data is really not public.

I see heidfeld has 2 kers buttons. one on each side and kubica has only one.
very different in what they like.

I am gad that the only buttons I have to use regularly are the right and left button on the mouse, and even that I can sometimes get wrong
interesting to see that each driver even uses different colour of the buttons … did not realize that the wheels differ so much even from driver to driver within the same team …

the f1 steering wheel is now standarized, Nick Heidfield have said that theirs own design was more clever from the “usuability” point of view

wow are you kidding 40k for just the wheel ?
I knew they were costly but wowwwwww.
so the fiber is what costs so much.
what is it made of ? somekind of supercarbon ?
also does the connection signal change when
the wheel is moved from car to car ?
as in does each driver have their own
frequency so the controllers, recognize the
data from each wheel seperately ?
so each driver has their own wheel, but has another
driver used another drivers wheel in a pinch ?
as I noticed they are all different.
my husband wants to know about the ecu -
he’s curious as to if it’s moved from car to car
with the wheel for each driver, as a custom unit
or is each car using a standard ecu ?
so you got a buncha questions in this test.
thanks for the comment, it’s highly appreciated.
just so you know, I am really a fan of kubica and heidfeld.
they’re right up there with hamilton for me.
I’m even hoping for F1 Gear for My Birthday this year.
but really doh, you know he (mijac) ain’t gonna do no 50 shows don’t you ?

The steering wheels are made up of materials like carbon fibre, aluminium, titanium, steel, rubber and plastic.
The wheel can be moved from car to car as the ECU is standard for all teams now.
Has another driver used another drivers wheel before? I really have no idea. I’ve never heard that before, but of course it is possible, but a little clumsy.
The question about the ECU. It is standard and remains in the car and all F1 cars have the same one supplied by McLaren.
I hope that’s it. I’m by no means an F1 engineer.

you know McLaren has a shop around the corner from my studio in Michigan. justa lil fyi, so I may be tempted to stop in there sometime soon and quiz em. if I do, I’ll make sure to put you in the loop.
thanks for the response, cause we had a lil heated argument going on over here about if the wheels were made by the same folks who make the aircraft wheels for john travolta, and the wheels for Jay Leno’s race car. you’ve no doubt seen those.
