Nick Heidfeld Could Win His First Grand Prix
By
Nick Heidfeld has started 150 grand prix in his carreer that started with Prost Grand Prix and coming in as the reigning International F3000 Champion in 2000. Despite not having a grand prix victory to his name, Nick has some impressive stats that include a host of podium finishes, fastest laps, was part of the BMW Sauber 1-2 finish in Canada. In the paddock, Heidfeld is known as one of the current best overtakers as was evident last season when he pulled off a couple of double passes and did a rain dance through the field in Spa Belgium.
Crash.net has just concluded a poll to see which driver is most likely to win their first grand prix this season and Nick Heidfeld was the overwhelming winner of the poll. Now, I missed that poll so didn’t vote, but bias aside, I would have picked him as well. BMW Sauber are going into this season as one of the teams to beat with both drivers pumped to get started.

I actually don’t care if either Heidfeld or Kubica win a grand prix, I just want one of them to be on the top of the podium at a few more grand prixs this year. I do think Heidfeld is overdue for a grand prix win though. I think BMW and Thiesen are probably getting antsy with his not winning one yet…but who would replace him? Vettel coming back?

If Nick has a good season he’s a good bet to continue with the team I think.
I also think we’ll see him on the winning side of things this year.

Hopefully, I also hope this is a big upset season as many expect. I’d like to see teams like Toyota and Williams running closer to the front of the pack to keep things competitive. It was a two team race in a lot of races last year and I’ll be glad to see a team like BMW or Renault fighting for the lead in the wet at Spa instead of McLaren and Ferrari.

Right now I would guess Ferrari, BMW Sauber, Toyota, and Renault will be pretty close at the front. McLaren I’m sure will join it before too long.
I’m not so sure about Williams though. They haven’t appeared too confident yet and Nico isn’t happy.

Here’s to hoping that Heidfeld can steal a 1st place from somewhere, but also that he’s not left out of the top 3 for many races this season along with Kubica. Heres to a great season for BMW Sauber

Later today or tonight for me it all gets underway.

Based on pre-season testing, I see the current order as Ferrari & BMW VERY close, Brawn, Toyota, Williams & Renault close, RedBull, Mclaren.. notwithstanding the ‘creative’ diffusers. If they are deemed illegal – the order would then be Ferrari & BMW very close followed by Toyota, Renault, RedBull, Mclaren.
Will Heidfeld win this year? I think so, as long as Kubica doen’t push him off to top step to yet another second place. I feel Kubica has more raw speed than Heidfeld, but Heidfeld’s smooth and progressive driving technique and incredible passing finesse could easily land him a win this year.
Like a mother to her baby, Heidfeld can really nurse his tires and this will play into strong race pace with KERS where tire wear is a weight penalty. It’s known that Heidfeld is 10+ Kg lighter than Kubica, so he may run with KERS more often. Could this alone give him an edge to the top step?

I doubt Nick will score a win but he has a good shot for a podium or two. He is one of the most inconsistent drivers on the grid and is definitely the most inconsistent of all the front-runners (at least in terms of last season’s front-runners).
When Nick’s future was in doubt, his flagging performance suddenly strengthened. Then when his contract was renewed, he let his motivation drop again. Heidfeld’s issue is not a weight advantage but one of motivation. Were it not for BMW’s odd preference for a Teutonic driver, I doubt he would still have his seat.

Dave: I don’t think we can take one qualifying session in the first race of the season as an indication of dropped motivation. Granted the q was poor, but the race not his fault at all. He was hit in turn 1 and then drove a damaged car.
I look for some better things than last year and do cross my fingers for a win.

Nick Hiedfeld will get it this year. You can trust that with a driving record like that and a determiniation (plus skill) he’ll be up there with the checkered.
