BMW Sauber’s Australian GP – Proof was There, the Result Wasn’t
By
“I had a chance to win this race,”
“Button and Vettel were on soft tyres and struggling, while I was on the harder compound and was able to drive much quicker. I was already in front, but he didn’t want to let me by. I think Sebastian was a bit too optimistic. Had this been the last corner OK, but there were still three laps to go and he really had no realistic chance to defend his position. I was so much quicker. My car was very good.”
Despite these disappointments I came away from the grand prix knowing McLaren couldn’t challenge the speed of Brawn Gp, Ferrari couldn’t either. Where was Renault in the picture? They certainly couldn’t match the pace either, but BMW Sauber with Robert Kubica could and he was actually in a great position to have a go at the race lead and a win. He had even set the fastest lap of the race. Sure, Vettel and Button were on the super soft tires or what was left of them and were losing time badly whereas Kubica was on the medium tires and in good shape, but the F1.09 showed great pace throughout. The proof was there, the result wasn’t.
I have no doubt that if Heidfeld was able to drive an undamaged F1.09 he would have been well up in the order as well.
It’s on to Malaysia next weekend and even with the poor outcome of Australia, there is a lot to look forward to from BMW Sauber. I have no doubt Kubica and Heidfeld will be serious threats to the new front runners.

It’s quite a surprise, how the first race went and finished. Brawn GP will make this year’s championship more interesting! I’m a Ferrari fan, but it’s nice to see other teams doing well for a change.

BMW is there, hope they can develop the car in the right direction to challenge Brawn (and RedBull and Williams) and keep Ferrari & McLaren behind. But until that diffuser case isnt resolved, ie. considered legal or not legal, we cant be certain 100% whos is good and whos not.

Was certainly a good start to the season for Brawn GP. Lets see what Malaysia brings then.

I’ve got money on possibly another BMW 1-2 finish this season. Barrichello still looks pretty iffy out there – despite having a faster car. Button admitted in the post-race interviews that the last few laps for him were a bit tough. I think BMW will bring the fight to other teams and I’d be surprised if we saw a repeat of the Australia race for BMW this season.

pcmemoirs: It’s good to have a fresh team up front for new competition. Kind of forces the old boys hands a bit.
Chaostheory: I have a feeling those diffusers will be considered legal at the appeal. Either way every other team has them on their drawing boards as we speak.
gragop: I’m looking for another 1-2. Ya, Button’s tires went away as did Vettel’s. Not to take away from Kubica. He had a fastest lap of the day late in the race.

Wiggy: fun in the sand in Malaysia. Hardly any time to get ready. It’s just in a few days.
