All of the Questions Leading up to the Australian Grand Prix

By BMWF1guy

Just a few days now until the Australian Grand Prix and everyone’s there getting ready. It’s the coolest start of the season in a long time with all of the new rules in place and Brawn GP replacing Honda Racing. The 2009 drivers lineup hasn’t changed much this year and there is a new circuit on board in Abu Dhabi.

This season has left a lot of questions unanswered that pretty much everyone is dying to have answered.

First came KERS. Would it be worth it? Would KERS be safe enough? Is it justifiable in these economic times?

Heavier drivers like Robert Kubica haven’t been all that keen on KERS suggesting it would penalize heavier drivers. Drivers by nature are pretty critical so we may just have to wait and see. BMW Sauber were the first to say they are KERS race ready, but haven’t let anyone know if they will actually use it in Melbourne. Is Melbourne a circuit to use KERS on? Other teams have announced they will be using KERS in Melbourne so maybe it is a track suited for it.

Then it was the front wings. Wide shovel like things leading the car. They certainly don’t look as good as previous wings and how ugly will they look after the first corner in Melbourne? The front wings are also adjustable on the fly so how much effect will they have?

The dramatic changes in aerodynamics to the cars is to stimulate passing attempts by reducing wake behind the cars. Will that be the case? During test weeks Nick Heidfeld suggested that passing was easier, but that was testing and racing is racing.

Throughout most of winter testing, BMW Sauber impressed me and speculation is that they maybe second behind Ferrari in the ‘who’s the best’ polls. Then came Brawn GP and boy did they come. Straight out of the factory and onto the track they were fast, but was that too good to be true? They had limited testing after all, but remained fastest until all of their testing was done. Is Brawn GP a real threat? Will they give BMW Sauber more competition?

Now, Brawn GP’s diffuser along with Williams and Toyota are being brought into question about how legal they really are? Some say as much as .5 of a second illegal. They of course deny this and how will this be solved? Will they race with the controversial diffusers and let the stewards make the decision after the race? Could we have another board room race winner in Melbourne?

These and many more await the teams and many if not all will be answered by the checkered flag in Australia.

Why not give your final thoughts on these questions. I’d like to hear what you think just a few days from the start.
