2009 Season at BMWF1blog
By
During the week prior to a grand prix I will be writing on what we might expect from the team for the upcoming race. Come race weekend I will post the results of both Friday practices as well as Saturday practice. I find these practice sessions fairly informative even if they are practice only and we don’t know exactly what setups are being tested etc. I will also post full qualifying times and not just the final grid as well as a BMW Sauber qualifying report.
Come Sunday, I will get race results up as quickly as I can and following that, later Sunday or Monday I will put up my race review from a BMW Sauber point of view. Not to leave out every other team, I will also put up a post highlighting race reviews from other F1 blogs so you can have your fix.
Aside from race related posting, I will also write on other BMW Sauber news as it happens through the season.
Lastly but certainly not least, I will be once again participating in the F1wolf Prediction game.
I do have a job that takes me away from my computer at random times but I will do my best to keep up as quickly as I can.
So stop by, leave a comment and we can have a great season at bmwf1blog.

the prediction game will be fun this year, I suspect the average scores much lower than last year

Here’s to another great championship! Look forward to your reviews and latest news info. Brawn has really scared my pants off (along with half the paddocks pants, but I think the F1.09 has some hidden pace from testing, as last year).
May the best team win.

BMWF1guy,
What’s your take on the legality of the “creative diffusers” that the Toyota, Williams and Brawn cars are running?
If they are deemed illegal, the above teams might as well focus on 2010. If they’re deemed legal, I hope BMW has been working on a contingency plan to incorporate this diffuser style to suit the F1.09. According to some reports, it’s worth 0.5!

That’s a tough one. Nothing seems to be happening until Australia where Toyota, Brawn, and Williams will probably run their current diffusers. Do they leave it up to the stewards after the race or not?
If they do, we know the stewards are so unpredictable and probably not the right people to make this decision.
Do I think they are illegal? I’m not such a tech expert, but I’ve seen diagrams and the regs and it could go either way I guess.
.5 seconds a lap sounds a bit much, but I bet these teams have an modified version ready to go if needed and it may not cause too much trouble for them. That’s my optimistic view because we want a clean season opener.

Red Bull has already promised to launch a formal complaint this weekend. Your right, the stewards can be quite unpredictable – probably this will follow due process and eventually end up in the hands of an FIA Tribunal. Sucks that the race results in the first couple of races may be disputed until the devices legality is confirmed.
It sounds like some teams running more conservative diffusers explored this approach but decided against it (Red Bull has claimed that they spoke with the FIA last year and was discouraged from the aero solution).
Generally Ferrari are very liberal in their interpretation of the rules, ‘pushing the envolope’ so to speak, so their abstinence from this solution speaks volumes to me. Honestly, I do not believe they just “didn’t think of this” during development.
0.5 was claimed by Helmut Marko of RedBull, an F1 engineer (http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/090323174313.shtml as source)
I have very limited Tech background, but I presume it would be much easier to retrofit a “double diffuser” onto a honed car than to remove this core aero solution from a design that’s built around it.
A lot remains to be seen. This is getting pretty hot and intense and we havn’t even reached the first practice.

I don’t know how easy it would be to replace them, but I’m sure they would be prepared for that at some point.
BMW Sauber are now in the ‘protest’ over these diffusers.

Yeah, along with Ferrari and RedBull. Apparently the appeal by either side won’t be heard until at least after Malaysia next Sunday. Lots of nerves running high in the Paddock no doubt.
It’s hard to say how long it would take them to regain pace with a conservative diffuser. Look at Renault with the Mass Damper situation. It was worth several tenths to them, and it wasn’t even a core aero component. The diffuser is a key aero element that the whole front and midsection of the car is built around – if they’re deemed illegal this would be a major issue for Williams Brawn and Toyota.
It’ll be interesting to see how things play out!
