More on the Aerodynamic Changes in 2009

By BMWF1guy

The basic idea for most of the new tech regulations is the reduction of downforce. With cars becoming so very aerodynamic a ‘wake’ or ‘wash’ is produced behind the car that is so disorganized it disrupts the stability of a trailing car making passing extremely difficult. The most noticeable results of rules reducing this ‘wake’ is the front and rear wing.

2008 Front and Rear Wings

The front wing has been lowered and widened to increase it’s efficiency. This is why we see they very wide shovel like front wings almost scraping the ground appearing on the 2009 entries. Included within the front wing will be a driver controlled flap he can use to aid in passing. The rear wing which in previous years has been low and wide is now higher and much narrower in hopes to reduce this ‘wake’ production and allow a trailing car to follow and remain on the track.

First Interpretation of 2009 Front and Rear Wings

When looking at any of the 2008 entries you can see many aerodynamic appendages sprouting just about everywhere. All of these are now banned.

The cars look different yes? I’m getting use to this new look and if the rules achieve what they are intended to do we can see much more action through the corners.

I’m interested to see the final product on the F1.09. I noticed that the 2009 Ferrari entry looks very long, much longer than the 2008 car with the driver moved further forward. Hopefully BMW won’t turn out like this but I’m wondering if it’s moved the driving position further forward to accomodate the KERS system?
