One of the Poorest Races for BMW Sauber

By BMWF1guy

The Brazilian Grand Prix had to be one of the poorest races for BMW Sauber I have seen all season. Both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica finished 1 lap down in 10th and 11th and both dropped down one position in the final driver standings.

Things started badly for Robert when the rain came just before the race. The race was delayed about 10 minutes or so in hopes the rain would stop and the teams could change tires if they wanted to. Guess what? They did change tires, but not Robert, he opted to keep his dry tires and went off with the parade lap hydroplaning all the way. Then as the cars lined up on the grid, he pitted to change to intermediates leaving him to start from pit lane. The rain didn’t drench the entire circuit, but a good portion was and the only choice of tires to start the race considering the amount of water on the wet parts was intermediates.

The race finally started with Robert in the pit and Nick in a respectable 8th, but Nick spun the tires too much on the start and watched 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th… (you get the picture) go by.

Alright, enough of the sarcasm, but what else can I say?

Nick Heidfeld did fight hard throughout the race, but the car was ridiculously unbalanced with tire problems leaving him with no grip and he was eventually lapped. Kubica on the other hand simply didn’t look like he was trying out there. He sat behind Adrian Sutil in a Force India and stayed there for lap after lap. The only thing he’s had to say is he was stuck behind Sutil. I have a hard time believing that considering that after Hamilton and Vettel charged up behind him and lapped him with ease he picked up his pace and stayed with them. What about earlier?

I’m sad to say that the F1.08 has taken a giant leap backward in pace at least from what it was in Canada while just about every other team has moved forward. This was a dreadful race for BMW Sauber fans and a bitter pill to take in the last race of the season.

The season on a whole was a great one for the team with respect to their goals and the reliability of the car. I will do a few posts on the BMW Sauber season in the coming week.

It looks like in the final 2 races Kubica suffered the same qualifying difficulties that troubled Heidfeld for more than half season …

Funny you say that because that’s a post I was preparing yesterday for today. From what I have been reading and noticing, his qualifying problems may have even started earlier than the last 2 races.
