Angry Kubica: Friday Free Practice
By
During the first free practice for the Belgian Grand Prix Friday, Robert Kubica had what is described as ‘harsh words’ for his mechanics. What had apparently happened was the mechanics set the car with the wrong settings and sent him out with a very poor handling car. Shame shame, this is Spa with rain around the forest.
This was of course corrected and Kubica went on to post a faster time than Heidfeld.
Robert Kubica: 1:49.139
Nick Heidfeld: 1:49.185
Rain was a factor in practice session 2 and at one point no cars were on the track. Rain was not heavy enough for a change of tires, but enough that slicks were too dangerous.
So how did Heidfeld and Kubica do? Not bad. Finding qualifying pace and race pace weren’t an issue today and both finished fairly happy with what was accomplished.
Nick Heidfeld: 1:49.725
Robert Kubica: 1:49.875

“The conditions today were variable, especially in the afternoon session. Therefore today it was not only the testing that was difficult, but also evaluating the results of our programme. At the end of the day the conditions were the same for everybody. We shall now analyze the data and prepare for Saturday. When I was doing a practice start at the end of the session the engine stalled.”

“Generally speaking my first day of practice here was okay. The track’s level of grip was, as expected, low and this meant it wasn’t too easy to drive the car. We have made some small changes during the course of the day, but, due to the inconsistent weather conditions, it was extremely difficult to make judgments. Because of the weather we couldn’t do our usual tyre comparisons either, as we could not run the harder and softer compounds under the same conditions. This makes the analyzes tricky but that’s the same for everybody.”
